Fodor's Review

With only two small dining rooms, this family-owned lunch spot dishes out an impressive amount of vegetarian cuisine. Opened in 1951 by Giorgio's parents, La Vecchia Latteria (The Old Dairy) began life as a breakfast place, but transformed into a vegetarian restaurant when Giorgio's wife Teresa started introducing her Sicilian influence into the kitchen in the 1980s. Nestled on a small street just steps away from the Duomo, it offers an array of freshly prepared, in-season dishes, including parmigiana di melanzane (eggplant parmesan), lasagna with taleggio cheese, and scamorza dolce (sweet cheese made from Italian cows' milk). The menu changes daily; try the mixed plate, which offers a taste of eight different small dishes. To beat the lunch rush arrive before 1 pm. Between the months of February and July, on Tuesday and Thursday nights, as well as occasional times throughout the year, the restaurant hosts an aperitivo called "Eppi Auar" (Happy Hour) from 7 to 10 pm with live music and an all-you-can-eat buffet for €9.
