The Four Seasons has been cited more than once by the Italian press as the country's best city hotel—perhaps because once you're inside, the feeling is anything but urban. Built in the 15th century as a convent, the hotel surrounds a colonnaded cloister, and some rooms have balconies looking on to a glassed-in courtyard. Everything about the place is standard Four Seasons (high) style. The Theater restaurant has some of Milan's best hotel dining. Pro: Beautiful setting that feels like Tuscany rather than central Milan. Con: Fodors.com readers find the rooms a little on the sad side.

Our large room lacked an ounce of character and the mini bar prices are quite ridiculous. However the concierge service is out of this world - they got us into nightclubs, arrange limo hire, got our rental car taken away etc etc.
