We first went to the Rusall in 1989, with our 10-month-old son in tow, and we have been back a dozen times since. The setting--perched on a hill overlooking Lake Como--is exceptional, and one can spend hours into the night gazing across the moonlit lake to Bellagio and Varenna. The rooms are simple but comfortable, and nearly all have balconies overlooking the lake. The Pesenti family that owns and manages the hotel maintains a warm family atmosphere that envelopes their guests (supplemented by a chatty myna bird), and the meals provided as part of the demi-pension plan are varied and invariably delicious. We like to hop the boat to Como for sightseeing, shopping, and dining, but head back to our hillside retreat over the lake at night. We've been to dozens of countries, but keep finding ways to squeeze in a stopover at the Rusall.
