Il Vittoriale Review

Gardone Riviera, a once-fashionable 19th-century resort now pleasantly faded, is the former home of the flamboyant Gabriele d'Annunzio (1863-1938), one of Italy's greatest modern poets. D'Annunzio's estate, Il Vittoriale, perched on the hills above the town, is an elaborate memorial to himself, filled with the trappings of conquests in art, love, and war (of which the largest is a ship's prow in the garden), and complete with an imposing mausoleum.
