Ambasciata

Ambasciata Review

Heralded by food critics the world over as one of Italy's finest restaurants, Ambasciata (Italian for "embassy") takes elegance and service to new levels. Chef Romano Tamani, who is co-owner with his brother Francesco, makes frequent appearances abroad but is at home in tiny Quistello, 20 km (12 mi) southeast of Mantua. He offers those willing to make the trek (and pay the bill) an ever-changing array of superlative creations such as timballo di lasagne verdi con petto di piccione sauté alla crème de Cassis (green lasagna with breast of pigeon and red currant).

As highly experienced Michelin restaurant travellers, this has to rate as the worst. The clue should have been... no menus; no prices and only a total of four covers including ourselves. The bill for a mediocre meal, was an eye watering EUR 339 including an average bottle of wine. This was a stitch up from start to finish. EUR 25 for 2 scoops of sorbet ! EUR 50 for a basic main course and EUR 35-45 for a basic starter.
The restaurant is also full of flying insects and every glass of wine is peppered with mosquitoes and flies floating in the wine glass

This is a chef who very much engages in theatre on the welcome and then promptly falls asleep at his table in the restaurant whilst his maitre d' is also comfortably ensconced at another table engaging in a conversation all evening with the chef and the other 2 diners.

This was a meal and a bill from hell. How Michelin could even rate a restaurant like this is beyond me.

The chef patron is well past retirement and should have ceased operating a long time ago.

Avoid this restaurant at all cost as otherwise you will be facing the same nasty stitch up that we faced this evening.
