Commanding a panoramic view over Lake Como, this early-20th-century art nouveau building is the city's finest hotel. The marbled public spaces have an understated elegance, and the guest rooms are done in floral patterns and furnished with large walnut wardrobes and silk-covered sofas. In summer the garden terrace is perfect for relaxing over a drink. Bar delle Terme (-$), the candelit restaurant, is worth a trip. The cranberry-hue space, filled with plush velvet sofas, resembles a large living room. The food and service are as fine as the decor. Reservations are strongly advised, as there are only a few tables. It is closed Tuesday.
