Only blocks from La Scala, this hotel, which opened in 1863, is sometimes called the Hotel Verdi, because the composer lived here for 27 years. His apartment, complete with his desk, is now the Presidential Suite. It's everything you hope for in a traditional European hotel; dignified but not stuffy, elegant but not ostentatious. Moss-green and persimmon velvet enliven the 19th-century look without sacrificing dignity and luxury. The Don Carlos restaurant is one of Milan's best. Pros: Traditional and elegant, great location. Con: Fitness center has natural light, but is not well appointed.
