Villa d'Este

Via Regina 40, Cernobbio, Lombardy, 22012, Italy

One of the grandest hotels in Italy has long wlecomed Europe's rich and famous, housing them in guest rooms still furnished in the Empire style. Built on the site of a former nunnery as Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio's summer residence, this lakeside retreat has had a colorful and checkered history since its completion in 1568, swinging wildly between extremes of grandeur and dereliction. Its life as a private summer residence ended in 1873, when it was turned into the fashionable luxury hotel it has remained ever since. A broad veranda sweeps out to the lakefront, where a swimming pool extends above the water; La Veranda restaurant boasts stunning views and top-notch cuisine. The fanciful pavilions, temples, miniature forts, and mock ruins ensure a walk in the gardens is full of whimsical surprises.
