Most sights in Florence are concentrated in the relatively small centro storico (historic center), and walking through its streets and alleyways is a discovery in itself. Today a handful of the more than 200 towers built in the 12th and 13th centuries survive; look for them them as you explore. The town has managed to preserve its predominantly medieval street plan and mostly Renaissance infrastructure while successfully adapting to the insistent demands of 21st-century life. While you wander through the area, you'll pass unforgettable sights like the Duomo, the Battistero, and the Piazza della Signoria. There are countless museums, but you won't want ot miss the Galleria degli Uffizi and the Galleria dell'Accademia. You'll also want to stroll across the Ponte Vecchio to the Oltrarno (literally "the other side of the Arno") to see such wonders as the Palazzo Pitti and the Giardino di Boboli.
