Florence Sights

Gucci Museo Review

Open since September 2011, this museum has all the class and elegance associated with the Gucci name. Tasteful displays of their famous luggage, shoes, and sporting goods (including snorkels and flippers) fill this 14th-century building called the Palazzo del Tribunale di Mercatanzia. Centuries ago, the place heard and tried cases by disgruntled guildsmen, and it's an odd juxtaposition to see an early 15th-century fresco of Christ crucified in a room filled with 20th-century jewelry. You can also see Hillary Swank's 2011 Academy Awards dress, as well as several others in a dramatically lit room. Also on hand are rooms for temporary exhibitions, a bookstore devoted mostly to things fashionista, and a café serving light lunches and other, more substantial fare.
