Religious Sites, Fiesole
Fodor's Review:
From the church of San Domenico, it's a five-minute walk northwest to the Badia Fiesolana, which was the original cathedral of Fiesole. Dating to the 11th century, it was first the home of Camaldolese monks; later, Benedictines and Augustinians lived here. Thanks to Cosimo il Vecchio, the complex was substantially restructured. The facade, never completed due to the death of Cosimo, contains elements of its original Romanesque decoration. The attached convent once housed Cosimo's valued manuscripts; today it's the site of the European Institute, for pre- and postdoctoral studies. Its mid-15th-century cloister is well worth a look.
