Chiaja Hotel de Charme

Via Chiaia 216, Naples, Campania, 80121, Italy

No views here, but this 18th-century palazzo has a great location and its apartments, all on the first floor, have plenty of atmosphere. Originally owned by the Marchese Nicola Le Caldano Sasso III, whose portrait hangs above the lobby's fireplace, it is now run by his granddaughter Mimi. Antiques from when the palace was new add a personal touch to the elegant guest rooms, most of which have whirlpool baths. One section was once a brothel; rooms there are named for the ladies who then occupied them.

PROS

  • good location near Piazza del Plebiscito and the Royal Palace
  • on a bustling pedestrians-only street

CONS

  • no views in a town with some great ones
  • even with air-conditioning, some rooms get hot in summer
