For a sunny Sorrentine welcome this hotel can't be beat. With their high-wattage smiles, the front-desk staff seems to banish all your cares in a minute. Set just a block off Piazza Tasso (which leads directly to the historic quarter), the Belle Epoque building sits astride Sorrento's ancient city walls and overlooks the picturesque Chasm of the Mills. Once past the Art Nouveau entrance, décor is solidly traditional: mini-balconies, great TV, and top air-conditioning make the guest rooms into perfectly serene havens. Breakfast is a winner—the room was overflowing with molto contento guests, some enjoying their cappuccinos around the gorgeous pool. Pros: staff has none of the snootiness of the Sorrento palace hotels; very lavish breakfast. Cons: a few blocks from the bay; across from some modern buildings.
