Europa Palace

Fodor's Review:

A superbly located dowager, the Europa Palace claims top real estate—not only does it perch directly over Sorrento's Marina Piccola, it is just a few minutes' stroll to center-city Piazza Tasso. Palatial, indeed, is the word to describe the stupendously tall ceilings, marblelized lobby, and vast terraces over the Bay of Naples. Panoramic, in fact, sums up the vista from the fantabulous pool (perhaps the biggest in Sorrento) which overlooks the harbor jetty and is surrounded by gardens and a sunbathing pier. While the hotel's hefty size means tour groups and wedding parties, the warmth of the staff extends an intimate personal touch over all. The damask-and crystal restaurant offers Sorrentine favorites but the kitchen has enough nouvelle tricks up its sleeve to tempt the transatlantic diner. Pros: top location; spectacular pool; ambitious chef. Cons: somewhat spartan bathrooms; guest rooms are so large furnishings get lost.
