The most supremely stylish hotel in southern Italy, J. K. Place has almost made every other accommodation on Capri seem dowdy and dull since it opened in 2007. Set in a majestic 1876 villa perched over the island's Marina Grande harbor (yet beautifully removed from its hurly-burly), the hotel welcomes you into salons so sensationally glamorous they made the cover of Europe's Architectural Digest. Nautical blue walls and white Corinthian columns set off a dazzling symphony of vintage photographs, 19th-century bronzes, starched white-linen wing armchairs, and enough coffee-table books to keep even the pickiest fashionista happy. Outside, regal stone sphinxes patrol enormous bayside terraces; across a vast lawn, flowering fruit trees shade the gargantuan pool, whose teak deck makes you feel you are going barefoot on a billionaire's yacht. The blissfully relaxing guest rooms have a Ralph Lauren-meets-Mediterranean Modern vibe, thanks to billowing white drapes, four-poster beds, 40s French commodes, and big plasma-TVs. More like a super-rich aunt's villa on Capri than a regular hotel, this place is a 3-D dream sequence that all high-lifers (sorry, room start at EUR 700) must check out. Pros: gorgeous décor; exquisite pool; very close to chic Tiberio beach; free shuttle to town. Cons: have to ask about breakfast specials; too few lounge chairs poolside; many guests clear-out for Capri nightspots.
