Glitzy with gold trim and offering the latest word in comfortable amenities, this 12th-century palace was renovated by Richard Branson almost a decade ago and dazzles some with its marble atrium and lofty coastal views. But in genteel Ravello, the naked nymph fountain and hot tubs on the roof strike a wrong, Donald Trump note. Happily, the Rossellini restaurant, open to the public only in the evenings, is highly recommended, with a top chef and very elegant decor. Most rooms have ocean views, with high arched ceilings and tile floors that lend a Mediterranean feel—some are accented with antiques. The "infinite suite" has to be seen to be believed, though its price also approaches infinity. Pros: Great attention to detail, tasty breakfasts. Cons: Silly glass elevators, overly restored historic mansion.
