Although it's a short trip, just 3 km (2 mi) from the mainland, this little volcanic outcropping remains a secret to many. Sun, cliffs, and sea combine to create the distinctive atmosphere so memorably immortalized in Il Postino. Towns like Terra Murata are barnacled onto hillsides, ancient Baroque abbeys like San Michele glitter amid the rocky terrain, while bird-lovers flock to the Vivara nature preserve.
