$$$, Clifden
Fodor's Review:
Creeper-covered, as if under a Sleeping Beauty spell, gorgeous Abbeyglen sits framed by towering trees at the foot of the glorious Twelve Bens Mountains. If time hasn't completely stopped here, it has certainly slowed down -- but that's just the way the relaxed guests want it. Surrounded by gardens with waterfalls and streams, the Victorian castle-manor was built in 1832 by John D'Arcy, the founder of Cliftden and builder of Clifden Castle. Inside, each guest room is uniquely decorated with heavy, ornate, dark-wood furniture and rich colors befitting a castle. Although it's in a very quiet and seemingly secluded location, the hotel becomes busy during complimentary afternoon tea, and has a busy nightlife scene, with live traditional music in its bar and big-name touring acts in its function room. This makes it a particularly popular weekend destination with Irish city-dwellers.
