The West's most convenient international airport is Shannon, 25 km (16 mi) east of Ennis. Galway Airport, near Galway City, is used mainly for internal flights, with steadily increasing U.K. traffic. Knock International Airport, at Charlestown—near Knock, in County Mayo—has direct daily service to London's Stansted, Luton, and Gatwick, and to Manchester and Birmingham. A small airport for internal traffic only is at Knockrowen, Castlebar, in County Mayo. Flying time from Dublin is 25 to 30 minutes to all airports. No scheduled flights run from the United States to Galway or Knock; use Shannon Airport. Connemara Airport at Inverin, which is 29 km (18 mi) west of Galway on R336, services the Aran Islands.

From Shannon Airport you can pick up a rental car to drive into the West, or you can take a bus to Limerick, from which there are bus connections into the West. Galway Airport is 6½ km (4 mi) from Galway City. No regular bus service is available from the airport to Galway, but most flight arrivals are taken to Galway Rail Station in the city center by an airline courtesy coach. Inquire when you book. A taxi from the airport to the city center costs about EUR 15. If you're flying to Knock International Airport, you can pick up your rental car at the airport. Otherwise, inquire at the time of booking about transport to your final destination. There's a bus link to Charlestown where you can connect with Bus Éireann's national network. Connemara Airport is 27 km (16 mi) from Galway City, and is accessible by shuttle bus.
