Built in 1845 right on Eyre Square to coincide with the arrival of the railway, and known formerly as the Galway Great Southern, this is still a popular lodging. The lobby has been zapped into the 21st century by its new owners (who also own the "g"), with stylish touches like zebra-striped chairs and dramatic lighting. The guest rooms are simply but tastefully decorated in neutral colors, with one bold color statement. It's definitely worth upgrading from standard, to get more space and the better views. The deluxe rooms in the original building have tall ceilings and windows and are particularly elegant, though those at the front directly above the bar can be noisy late into the night. Rooms in the back, on the fifth floor, have views of the docks and Galway Bay. The rooftop spa includes an open-air hot tub. French-Irish cuisine is served at the formal, pleasantly old-fashioned Oyster Bar and Grill. Pros: historic hotel in city center; great location. Cons: Eyre Square teems with people late into the night; nightclub in hotel basement.
