Some of Ireland's finest country-house and castle hotels are in the West. Ashford and Dromoland castles provide a standard of luxury that you should experience at least once, if you can stretch your budget.

Star country-house destinations include antiques-filled Enniscoe House and the gracious creeper-clad Newport House in Mayo. Try to sample some of the smaller B&Bs as well: the home cooking at Kilmurvey House on the Aran Islands is renowned.

Other memorable destinations include the cliff-top Moy House at Lahinch, picture-perfect Gregan's Castle in the Burren, and the stunningly located Renvyle House in scenic Connemara. One of the great attractions of the West's hotels and guesthouses is their restful environment.

Among the newer, midrange hotels, Vaughan's in Lahinch and the Westport Plaza in Westport's town center offer exceptional standards of comfort and design. Indoor pools and tennis courts are the exception rather than the rule in this region, where business is largely seasonal, and the emphasis is on outdoor pursuits. Assume that all hotel rooms in this chapter have air-conditioning, in-room phones, TVs, and private bathrooms, unless otherwise indicated.
