Once inside this large, modern hotel you'll soon forget its blocklike external appearance, as the entrancing panorama of Killarney's lakes spread out before you takes its hold. It's hard to take your eyes off the view, as the famously changeable Killarney weather scuds across the skies (sunsets are not to be missed). As for the interior, standard international-hotel decor is enlivened by an impressive collection of original Irish art. Guest rooms are spacious, with all the luxury touches you would expect, including fruit bowl, sitting area, crisp white bed linen, and fluffy robes, plus a booklet on hiking trails that start right outside the hotel's door. The staff, many of whom are local, are unfailingly helpful. The Lakeside Restaurant has views over the lakes from the outside tables; the more intimate indoor dining areas are made cozy with wood paneling. The Spa at Aghadoe offers a full range of treatments, or you can simply relax in the Thermal Suite, where the mild heat should ease any post-golfing or post-hiking aches and pains. Pros: memorable view; excellent spa; pleasant staff. Cons: well out of town; a big hotel by Irish standards, with evidence of many redesigns in its long corridors.
