Hayfield Manor

Fodor's Review:

The Manor, a surprisingly soigné modern homage to the country-house style, is beside the UCC campus, five minutes' drive from the city center. The less than scenic location in an undistinguished suburb is forgotten as soon as you cross the threshold of this deluxe establishment. Ruddy with red brick and brightened by classy white-sash windows, its exterior hints at the comfy luxury within. Beyond a splendid, carved-wood double staircase, you can find the drawing room—a symphony of gilded silk, with white-marble fireplace, 19th-century chandelier, and chic armchairs—and the wood-panel library, which overlooks a walled patio and garden. Guest rooms are spacious and elegantly furnished in a version of the Louis XV style. The Victorian-style bar serves lunch, and then bar food until 7 PM, when the Manor Room restaurant ($$$-$$$$) opens for dinner. Pros: stylish and chic. Cons: a taxi or car ride to city center or a dull 15-minute walk; lack of scenic views.
