In good weather Blasket Islands Ferry vessels bring you from Dún Chaoin Pier to Great Blasket Island, a 15-minute trip. Landing is by transfer to rubber dinghy, and the island is steep and rocky, so you need to be fit and agile. (At the time of this writing, the Irish government is in the process of buying the island for the nation. By 2009 a new pier might be in place on the island. Then again, it might not. Check with the Dingle Tourist Information Office near your travel date.) Still, the unique experience offered by the deserted village and old cliff paths of the island makes it well worth the effort. The cost of the boat ride is EUR 30 round-trip. Alternately, you can take a two-and-a-half-hour eco-tour, with an optional landing, for EUR 40. Boats run from 10 to 4, weather permitting, between Easter and September.
