Experience top-of-the-scale Irish castle living at the Knight of Glin's imposing ancestral home, which has been in the FitzGerald family for 700 years. The palatial rooms showcase Glin's famous collection of 18th-century Irish furniture, and are superbly comfortable. The guest rooms are magnificent exercises in country-house style, with four-poster beds, vintage china-adorned walls, and furnishings that are the height of historic Irish chic. Traditional cuisine is served in the red dining room beneath portraits of FitzGerald ancestors. Happily, nonguests are welcome for dinner but must reserve in advance. Pros: it doesn't get much grander than this—vast rooms, splendid gardens, and old family retainers to anticipate your every whim. Cons: it may be ever-so grand, but it's still a family home, not a hotel; some may feel overwhelmed by the scale and the perfection of it all; your fellow guests more likely to be golfers than aesthetes.
