The Southwest is a great place for good food. County Cork in particular has become Ireland's top foodie destination.

Adventurous, well-traveled chefs make the most of the first-rate local specialties: succulent meats, fresh seafood, and farmhouse cheeses.

For another kind of dining experience, check out the medieval banquets at Bunratty and Knappogue castles, near Shannon—they're an undeniably touristy good time.

For accommodations, the Southwest has some of the great country houses, including Longueville House on the Blackwater River in County Cork, Adare Manor in County Limerick, the Park Hotel Kenmare, and the Sheen Falls Lodge, also in Kenmare.

At the other end of the spectrum is the uniquely Irish experience of a farmhouse bed-and-breakfast, such as Ballymakeigh House, near Youghal, where you can watch the cows coming home as you breakfast.

In between is a range of excellent family-owned and -run traditional hotels, such as the Seaview in Ballylickey on Bantry Bay, The Butler Arms in Waterville, and the secluded Carrig Country House near Killorglin.
