$$$$, Adare
Fodor's Review:
Play king or queen for a day at this spectacular (and, interestingly, American-owned) Victorian Gothic mansion, once the abode of the earls of Dunraven. The castellated mansion is enormous and set amid French-style gardens. Inside is a wonderland of vast stone arches and heavy wood carvings. Center stage is taken by the decorated ceiling in the baronial central hall and the 36-foot-high, 100-foot-long Minstrels' Gallery, wainscoted in oak. As for decor, a period air is retained but several of the color schemes are as bright as today and, thus, much of the time-burnished ambience is lost. The eight "staterooms" in the original house are the most sumptuous, with huge marble bathrooms and stone-mullioned windows. Most rooms have super-king-size beds; all have heavy drapes and carpets and overlook the 840 acres of grounds. Adare's golf course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., is one of Ireland's best. (Note that breakfast is a hefty EUR 23 extra here; plan accordingly.)
