city walls

Fodor's Review:

To really experience Derry's history, stroll along the parapet walkway atop the ramparts of the city walls (www.derryswalls.com), built between 1614 and 1618 and one of the few intact sets of city walls in Europe. Pierced by eight gates (originally four) and as much as 30 feet thick, the gray-stone ramparts are only 1½ km (1 mi) all around. Today most of the life of the town takes place outside of them. You can join one of the guided tours given by the information center, or follow the sights below in a counterclockwise direction.
