Causeway Hotel

Fodor's Review:

Owned by England's National Trust and flaunting a stunning location overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, this hotel is only a half mile from the celebrated Giant's Causeway. The hotel was founded in the 1840s then expanded in 1863 by one Mr. Trail (who masterminded the Giant's Causeway Tramway that ran along the coast), and in 1890 it became the first Irish hotel to be completely lighted by electricity. Alas and alack, they should bring back some of the candles. Nearly all the historic patina has long disappeared—both the exterior and the interior are largely made up of white-on-white walls. Granted, the bar is welcoming, the dining room capacious, and the "high tea" a winner, but this spot will always be prized more for its setting than its mise-en-scene. Nouvelle cuisine thankfully never caught on in this part of the world, so prepare yourself for what the locals call "a good feed" (featured throughout the day in myriad bed-and-board packages). Other hotels may offer posh facilities, but this one gives you the tranquility and beauty of the glorious Antrim coastline right at your doorstep. Pros: the location is superb: right beside the sea, bracing coastal walks (often chilly even in summer) are on offer, but you'll feel the warmth when you enter. Cons: the special occasions involving families with parties of children or hordes of bikers come with a high decibel level; some rooms have dated and need modernizing.
