Gilbert's Restaurant & Townhouse

Gilbert's Restaurant & Townhouse Review

Just below Cobh's cathedral, a short step from the waterfront, this handsome cut-stone house dates to 1824. Locals can be seen lingering over coffee and newspapers through the streetfront windows. Parquet flooring links the café and bar area with the elegant bistro-style restaurant, where bentwood chairs and contemporary art combine to create a relaxed Continental atmosphere. The food is locally sourced and contemporary in style, with many light dishes on the menu. Start with the carpaccio of beetroot topped with goat's cheese fritters, or the smoked salmon, avocado and feta salad with honey mustard dressing, before sampling roasted loin of venison or linguine with prawns and mussels. The white chocolate mousse is a star among the desserts, but the lemon tart is equally popular. You can also spend the night here. The five bedrooms ($) are spacious, with woolen rugs on wooden floors, decorated in an uncluttered eclectic style.
