Fodor's Review

There's a real Scottish flavor to this venerable links course. The club was founded by members of Scotland's Black Watch regiment based in Limerick and the first course was designed by Old Tom Morris from St. Andrews in 1892. Then, in the 1920s, design maestro Alister MacKenzie created a wonderfully challenging 18 holes—full of undulating greens, huge bunkers, and maddening blind shots. Poorly thought-out alterations in the 1930s obliterated many of his innovations and

it wasn't until 1999 that a four-year project to re-create the MacKenzie magic began. The Castle Course is less of a challenge to the experienced player, but it has its moments: awkwardly placed bunkers and water hazards lie in wait.
