Planning Your Time

Though Reykjavík is quite spread out and much less dense than other Nordic capitals, most of the significant landmarks and sights are condensed in the city center or the downtown area. Within a relatively short walking distance you can visit Hallgrímskirkja, the largest church in Iceland and a remarkable building architecturally, and climb to the viewing platform on top which offers stunning views of the city and its surroundings. Reykjavík City Museum on Kistuhyl displays some fascinating exhibitions portraying life for the early settlers of Iceland.

If you have a couple of days, a trip to the Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa, just a 40-minute drive from the city, is a must. Another alternative is to rent a car and drive Route 1, the main highway that circles the island.
