The coast guard is the closest thing Iceland has to a national military. At the end of this pier, where the coast guard's vessels are berthed, is a distinctive yellow-beacon pylon. Today the coast guard, which tenaciously stood up to the British Navy during the cod wars, still has a handful of ships vigorously enforcing offshore fishing limits.
