Skaftafell National Park

Fodor's Review:

Bordering Vatnajökull is Skaftafell National Park, the largest of Iceland's three national reserves. Glaciers branching off Vatnajökull shelter Skaftafell from winds, creating a verdant oasis. In the park, you can walk for days on beautiful trails through a rare combination of green forest, clear water, waterfalls, sands, mountains, and glaciers. Iceland's highest peak, Hvannadalshnjúkur, reaching 6,950 feet, is just outside the park and provides a stunning backdrop. The famous Svartifoss (Black Falls) tumbles over a cliff whose sides resemble the pipes of a great organ. Don't miss Sel, a restored gabled farmhouse high up on the slope. Guided walks in the national park are organized daily in July and August.
