National Dance Theater
Arts / Performance Venues,
Varhegy (Castle Hill)
Fodor's Review:
This former Franciscan church was transformed into a more secular royal venue in 1787 under the supervision of courtier Farkas Kempelen. The first theatrical performance in Hungarian was held here in 1790. Heavily damaged during World War II, the theater was rebuilt and reopened in 1978. While the building retains its original late-baroque facade, the interior was renovated with marble and concrete. It is now used for performances of Hungarian contemporary dance, including ballet, as well as concerts. There is usually an art exhibit or a historical exhibition in its foyer -- usually theater-related, such as a display of costumes.
