Hotel Benczúr

District VI, Benczúr utca 35, Budapest, Budapest, 1068, Hungary, Budapest, Hungary

Why We Like It

The main attraction of Hotel Benczúr is simple: the low price. But it's otherwise well-run and clean, with decent drinks prices and a reasonable breakfast, and a leafy location close to the City Park. Budget travelers could do a lot worse.

Fodor's Expert Review

The leafy lanes of Budapest's embassy district are where you will find this quiet, simply furnished hotel that's well-priced but in need of some updating. Majestic Heroes' Square and the lovely City Park (containing the famous Szchenyi Thermal Baths) is but a short walk away, and your transport to the center is the antique underground railway line, the Földalatti (Metro Line 1) which is both aesthetically pleasing and pretty quick.

You Should Know The hotel has a vague smell of smoking in some of the public areas, which is unfortunate.

Room

Rooms are reasonably sized, with blue curtains and bedspreads. They are comfortable enough if a little tired, and there is air-conditioning.

Tip Some of the higher class rooms have balconies overlooking the garden or interesting nearby architecture - worth springing for, we'd say.

Bathroom

Some have baths, some showers, but all are clean, if in some need of modernization.

Lobby

The hotel's pine lobby, with red walls, is busy and friendly, with a slightly over-sensitive revolving door slowing guests down on their way in and out. There's a nice display of bright local art for sale on the walls.

You Should Know The hotel has a pretty business-like feel; on our visit, it was thronged with conference guests on a tea break.

Dining

Zsolnay Restaurant does a decent breakfast, included in the room rate, as well as reasonable Hungarian food all day. In summer, the garden is quite pleasant.

Drinking

Guests can also have a drink in the restaurant or garden.

What's Nearby

Getting Around

The hotel is close to the City Park, which is a nice break from the city, but public transport is required to reach most other sights in Pest or Buda - either on the aforementioned cute, reliable and easy underground system, or via bus.

Restaurants

Check out the traditional brick-walled Regős Vendéglő (10-minute walk) for some authentic Hungarian cooking. Or La Perle Noire Restaurant and Lounge (3-minute walk) is a classy French joint.

Bars

Rabbit Hole Bar and Cafe (10-minute metro, 15-minute walk) is a cool hole-in-the-wall style cocktail bar. Or for karaoke fans, Old Rams Karaoke Pub (10-minute walk) is also one of the nearer pubs to the hotel.
