Hungarian Street Food

While you can easily avail yourself of the usual urban mix of gyros, kebabs, and other common street fare, you should instead keep an eye out for two tasty and uniquely Hungarian street food items: Lángos ("flamey," named thus as it was originally baked over open fire) is a soft, deep-fried flatbread, sometimes filled with potato that comes with a variety of toppings, the garlic-sour cream-grated cheese combination being the classic option. Kürtőskalács ("stovepipe cake") is a sweet cake with caramelized sugar on the outside, in the shape of a hollow pipe that you can gradually unwind from one end as you eat it.
