Getting Here and Around
By bus the trip to Thessaloniki from Athens takes about seven hours, with one rest stop (no access to onboard toilets). Buy tickets at least one day in advance; one-way fare is about €35. The KTEL Thessaloniki Web site (www.ktel-thes.gr/) has good information in English about the Athens–Thessaolniki route. For other routes it is best to go to KTEL ticket-office terminals (praktorio), which are different for each destination or the bus station itself or call the KTEL Makedonia number (2310/595408). Intercity KTEL buses connect Thessaloniki with locations throughout Greece. The KTEL main terminal (or Bus station Makedonia as it is known) is at Giannitson 194–224, not too far from the city center. Note that buses to Halkidiki leave from another KTEL terminal at Kiffisias 33 at Egeou.
Buses traveling throughout the city streets of Thessaloniki are frequent and the routes practical. Bus 1 plies the route from the train station to the KTEL Main Terminal; Bus 78 goes from the KTEL Main Terminal to the train station and the airport; Bus 36 from Voulgari and Egnatia corner (in the eastern part of the city) goes to the KTEL Halkidiki Terminal (for Ouranoupolis, etc). Tickets cost €0.50 and are purchased at bus company booths, and at some kiosks (periptera) or corner stores; or for €0.60 on the bus. You can also buy a 24-hour ticket for €2. O.A.S.T.H. There are some 10 Athens–Thessaloniki trains per day, three express (4½ hrs). The fastest Intercity will set you back €50; other express options begin at €33. The standard train fare begins at around €14. You can get good information in English about trains by calling the OSE helpline, 1110. There are international trains daily from Thessaloniki to Istanbul, Belgrade and Bulgaria.
