Skiathos Town

The harbor is especially picturesque at sunset, when violet-orange lights cast a soft glow and houses on the hills behind the quay begin to glimmer. Onshore, pink bougainvillea, sweet jasmine, and the casual charm of brightly painted balconies and shutters add to the experience of wandering through narrow lanes and up steep steps that serve as streets. Activity centers on the waterfront or on Papadiamantis, the main drag, while shops, bars, and restaurants line the cobbled side streets. Watching over the east side of the port (known as the New Port) is the little church and clock tower of Ayios Nikolaos, reached by steps so steep they're almost perpendicular to the earth.
