This long-established landmark entices with its playful and innovative takes on classic Greek dishes. While the awe-inspiring panoramic vista of the Aegean Sea would be enough to please customers, owner Nikos Stamatakis and his chef father, Stamatis, wow diners with the island's most exciting cuisine, like chicken in geranium sauce, or moussaka with tuna instead of beef. The setting is laid-back yet elegant enough for a special occasion.
Enclosed within a leafy, serene courtyard, this restaurant serves possibly the highest quality food on the island. Traditional Greek fare is on the menu, with local specialties like Mastelo cheese. Eclectic dishes combine tantalizing flavors, like rock samphire with sweet pickled onions, or juicy nectarine salads with fresh seafood. With knowledgeable waiting staff to boot, this is many a Skiathos regular's favorite island restaurant.
One of Volos's claims to fame is its tsipouradiko taverns, named for the regional spirit made by distilling the residue of the grapes after pressing them to make wine. There are plenty to be found in the city's nooks and crannies, including this one, near the waterfront, which has combined the tradition with a youthful spirit that draws from modern gastro-style restaurants, with Edison lightbulbs, copper tubing, and aged raw wood. In addition to dozens of varieties of artisanal tsipouro, ouzo, raki, and zivania; the kitchen turns out a host of traditional mezes, also updated with an inventive gourmet touch.
You'll spot many signs for this restaurant around Skopelos Town, but don't let that put you off. The jasmine-scented garden setting here offers an escape from the hubub of the busy port, with a neat layout, low lighting, and gracious hosting by owner, Anna. Pasta and risotto dishes feature on the menu, with an excellent range of salads, plus local specialties like the honey-drizzled Skopelos cheese pie.
Situated on Skiathos's exceptionally stylish run of seafront restaurants, the recently renovated Kahlua draws in restaurant-goers for its distinctly bohemian style, ample open-air seating, ambient mood lighting, and effervescent energy. Book well ahead of visiting for a spot by the sea, where you'll have the best views of bobbing boats and glorious sunsets. The Greek menu features plenty of exciting salads with fruity twists, but it's most-loved for its fresh seafood.
"My Grandfather and I," as the name translates in English, serves terrific Greek cuisine in an eclectic dining room decorated with hanging spoons, bottles of wine and ouzo, and whole heads of garlic. The proud grandson suggests that diners order a selection of mezedes (small plates) and share with others at the table. The best include fried pumpkins with yogurt-tzatziki, zucchini croquettes, and meatballs doused with ouzo and served flambé. If you want a single dish, the baby goat served as a casserole is delicious. Due to popular demand they have also opened a second taverna in Kalamitsa with the same name.
The tapas bar, a rare type of restaurant to find not only on Skiathos but in the country overall, will provide you with a pleasant change of flavor and scene. Its colorful selection of hot and cold tapas includes classic Spanish eats such as paella and jamon (Spanish crude ham) as well as Greek-inspired appetizers, to be savored with a local or Spanish wine, or a refreshing mojito. Try also the tuna tartare, made with fresh local tuna and seasoned with a zingy lime and coriander dressing. The Catalan cream (a Spanish version of crème brûlée) or the chocolate soufflé make for two sweet finales. A friendly waitstaff is happy is happy to advise you on dishes as you take in the expansive harbor view, intoxicated by the lively atmosphere—but not the noise—of the main town below.
