Fodor's Expert Review Archontiko Tafilli 1891
Volos, Thessaly, Greece Fodor's Choice
Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.
The 1891 stands for the year this stone mansion in the hills above Volos was built. Converted into a guesthouse about 120 years later, this is one of the region's most unique accommodations. All the rooms, named after elements of Greek mythology, have their own architectureal and decorative style, with plush textiles, ornate wooden beds, and curvaceous metal chandeliers that almost seem drawn from the Hollywood film set of a medieval romance. Depending on the seasons, the impressive breakfast can be taken inside, in front of a roaring fire, or out on the terrace, which looks down on Volos and Pagasitikos Gulf.
PROS
- romantic
CONS
- drive up the mountain can be a bit challenging
- one room lacks a view
