Fodor's Expert Review Castle of the Knights

Kos Town Castle/Palace

Editor's Note: This location is no longer in operation.

Built by the Knights of St. John in the 15th century and taken by the Turks in 1522 (with the rest of the knights' Dodecanese holdings), the castle/fortress is an imposing presence on the harbor. It's best to let that remain the impression you have of this massive structure: Little remains inside the walls but a field littered with fragments of ancient funerary monuments and other sculptural material from the island's Greek and Roman inhabitants.
