Getting Here and Around
Rhodes is well served by flights, with several a day throughout the year on Olympic and Aegean airlines to and from Athens as well as Thessaloniki. SkyWest flies between Heraklion, Crete, and Rhodes, and during the summer also serves Rhodes from Santorini and Heraklion. Rhodes is also well served by scheduled and charter flights from London, Rome, and other major European cities. Diogoras Airport is in Paradissi, 15 km (12 mi) southwest of Rhodes town and well connected by public bus (running from 6 am to 11 pm, €5) and taxi, about €20 for the half-hour drive.
Rhodes is connected to Piraeus by two ferries a day, and the overnight trip takes about 15 hours. You will find schedules and booking information for ferry service to and from Rhodes and other islands in the Dodecanese at www.ferries.gr. Rhodes is also a hub for boat service, often via fast-moving catamaran, to other islands in the Dodecanese, with at least two boats a day in high season to and from Kos and about four to and from nearby Symi. Smaller boats, including those to other islands in the Dodecanese, dock at Rhodes town's 2,500-year-old Mandraki Harbor; the larger overnight ferries use the adjacent new harbor.
Rhodes Town's two bus terminals are hubs for service throughout the island—points on the western side of the island are served by buses from the West Side Station, near the shopping district of the New Town on Averof; most places on the eastern side are served from the East Side Station on Plateia Rimini, next to the market on Mandraki Harbor. Bus service is excellent, with, for example, buses to and from Lindos running almost hourly from the East Side Station; €3.70 each way, €25 by taxi.
In Rhodes, the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO or EOT), close to the medieval walls in the New Town, has brochures and schedules for buses and boats. It's open June-September, weekdays 9-9 (8-3 the rest of the year). The central Rhodes Municipal Tourism Office, near the bus station, is open May-October, daily 7:30 am-11 pm. The city of Rhodes maintains a helpful English Web site.
