  • 1. 3Sixty Grill

    $$ | International

If you tire of homespun tavernas serving up rustic menus in cobbled streets under blooming bougainvillea, 3Sixty is the rather brash grillhouse antidote. Sure, it's decoration is desperate to reassure you just how on trend it is, but after one or two excellent cocktails, you won't even mind the annoying horse photography on the walls. It also has the menu to back it up. Pata negra spareribs melt off the bone, the 150-day-aged rib-eye has flavor to beat the band, and the anthotyros-stuffed ravioli are a delight. Add to that comfortably the best wine list in the town.

Vasileos Alexandrou and Ferreou , Nafplion, Peloponnese, 21100, Greece
    27520-28068

    Known For

    • Excellent wine list and cocktail menu
    • Well-aged, grilled meats unlike anything else in Nafplion
    • Stylish setting
  • 2. 7 Thalasses

    $$ | Kentro

One of the better and most creative seafood restaurants in Thessaloniki offers a menu that maintains the delicate flavors of its ingredients but also manages to add a modern twist. For instance, the marinated sea bass tartare, seasoned with fleur de sel, lemon, and olive oil, is then covered with a sprinkling of roe, bringing to mind a wave gently breaking against your tongue. The only thing better than the delightfully light scallops in saffron sauce with caviar and mushrooms may be the restaurant's signature dish, mithopilafo (mussels with rice), an old favorite. As for the desserts, try its take on halva, with loukoumi (Turkish delight) ice cream, toasted pine nuts, and marinated raisins or the sumptious toasted almond millefeuille. It's a perfect way to end one of the memorable meals here. The attractive dining room is breezily decorated in light blue and gray hues, with exposed chrome accents and cream-color wood tables and chairs.

  • 3. Absinthe

    $

A relative newcomer to a local dining scene that doesn't change much over the years. This delectable Greek tapas restaurant-bar doesn't have a menu; it just serves what it has left, so don't go too late. The interior is pretty small, so tables mostly dot the pretty side street and across the road. In winter it also shuts early (about 5 pm). The dishes are sumptuous, coming in small (€4) or large (€8) plates, but the former is filling enough, with beans in tomato sauce or a spicy sausage casserole as likely to emerge as a smoked sardine salad. The quality is superb, and great value. Even if you only stop by for glass of tsipouro, you'll get a little taster to go with it. The perfect combination.

Spicy bourdetto (fish stewed with hot red pepper) and braised lamb shanks in red wine are usually on the menu. Drinks and sweets are served from midnight to 2 am.

  • 6. Agnanti

    $$

This long-established landmark entices with its playful and innovative takes on classic Greek dishes. While the awe-inspiring panoramic vista of the Aegean Sea would be enough to please customers, owner Nikos Stamatakis and his chef father, Stamatis, wow diners with the island's most exciting cuisine, like chicken in geranium sauce, or moussaka with tuna instead of beef. The setting is laid-back yet elegant enough for a special occasion.

  • 7. Aktaion

    $$

Since 1922, three generations of the Roussos family have offered hospitality and fine food in this tiny blue-and-white taverna. Outside tables overlook the caldera, inside murals and paintings are by the owner. Traditional recipes and local ingredients are given room to shine and are presented well by the attentive staff. If you are lucky enough to get a reservation, the cozy atmosphere may well find you chatting with fellow diners who are just as pleased with their choice.

  • 8. Aleria

    $$$ | Metaxourgeio

Restaurants, including this multiple award-winning Michelin-starred gem of Neoclassical design and inventive Mediterranean cuisine, are the reason Metaxourgeio's profile went up. As soon as you arrive in the beautiful garden, lit with fairy lights and scattered with statuettes and other creative decor details, you'll want to stay for hours; the winter dining area indoors is very elegant too, but not as uplifting. Chef Gikas Xenakis's cooking is a serious candidate for notoriety. Currently there are two types of tasting menus, "earth & sea" or "garden & nature," with a choice of four, five, or six dishes. There is also an excellent wine pairing menu available, but if you prefer to choose your own there is a wide-ranging wine list.

  • 9. Alexis 4 Seasons

    $$

Though known for its seafood, the handsomely decorated old rooms, beautiful walled garden, and panoramic view from the roof terrace found here are equalling enchanting. Mussels in wine, scallops in vodka sauce, shrimp risotto in an ouzo sauce, as well as simply grilled fish fill the menu. A side dish might be sautéed squash with wild glistrida (purslane), grown in the restaurant's own gardens.

    $

Crowning the Venetian Castle, the picture-perfect blue-and-white painted restaurant—a converted barn—enjoys probably the most breathtaking views in Skopelos Town, overlooking the glittering Aegean and the Panagitsa Church below. Traditional Greek fare like baked aubergines, souvlaki, and stuffed peppers are on the menu, plus plenty of local liqueurs. Tap into a Greek vein with owner Giorgo Xithari, who, along with local musicians and friends, will strum up a storm after 9:30 pm on his bouzouki and sing rembetika, traditional Greek acoustic blues.

  • 15. Ap’Allou

    $

With mouthwatering dishes inspired by Asia Minor and Greece, and ingredients from both the land (seasonal vegetables and quality meats) and the sea (fresh shellfish and seafood), this place is a satisfaction-guaranteed stop for lunch or dinner. The menu changes with the season, but luscious desserts, such as the delicious profiteroles and homemade ice cream are a must-try year-round. Whether you visit during the hot months, when white tables with colorful mats are laid out along the pedestrianized Old Town street, or during winter, when tsipouro-sipping locals huddle over loaded platters, Ap’Allou can best be described as cozy, jovial, and a joy (with a gourmet twist) for the tastebuds.

  • 16. Avli

    $$

In an herb-filled multitiered courtyard that leads to a barrel-vaulted dining room, some of the finest food for miles is skillfully prepared. Refined, distinguished dishes are its calling card; sophisticated but true to their traditional roots. Stuffed zucchini flowers are dressed with edible leaves and blooms from the garden, rabbit is paired with sweet tomato and tiny onions, and tender goat, straight from the hillside, is served with honey and herbs. The foams, flicks, and smears that so often blight this level of dining are refreshingly absent. The focus is on the ingredients, the majority of them local and organic, artfully transformed into a cooking of rare sophistication. Resevations are essential in season.

  • 17. Barriello

    $$

Romantic and rightly popular, Barriello has an enviable position with views of the sea and the Trypiti village square. A 150-year-old mansion has been repurposed to good effect by charismatic owner Takis. Local ingredients, mostly grown on their own farm, are sometimes playfully presented with elements of modern creative Greek cuisine. It's more fine dining than traditional taverna but the tastes are refined and recognisable and it is generally regarded as the best food on the island.

    Trypiti, Plaka, Milos, 84800, Greece
    6984218360

    Known For

    • Engaging service is a cut above
    • Well researched wine list
    • Clever and unusual food combinations
  • 18. Bassia

    $

Nestled a couple of kilometers up the coast in the quiet village of Akrotiri, where the breezes offer welcome respite from the humidity back in town, is the best-value dining experience on the island. The raised views here are spectacular, and best enjoyed as the sun melts over the sea. The service can be a little aloof, but the setting is exquisite and the seafood-heavy menu (sea bass, lobster pasta, steamed mussels) is well balanced by more homespun fare, such as the Zakynthian rabbit. Magical.

    Akrotiri, Zakynthos, Greece
    26950-25554

    Known For

    • Incredible views out over the coast
    • Good value for the quality of food

These homegrown ingredients find their way into a selection of Mediterranean-style dishes that are influenced by the couple's travels and include house-cured sardines, the island's freshest Greek salad, and juicy slow-roasted pork atop a chickpea puree.

  • 20. Bill and Coo

    $$$$

Alongside the infinity pool at the Bill and Coo Hotel, complete with shining stars that twinkle from the bottom, is served some of the finest food in Mykonos. A futuristic glass box or the outdoor terrace on balmier nights is the setting, for a master class in modern Mediterranean cooking. The ingredients are, of course, sublime but the seemingly unusual flavor combinations are applied to whimsical and off-beat presentations. Asian influences abound along with elements of molecular gastronomy but the cooking remains true to its island setting. It is cooking as theater—dramatic, emotional, and memorable.

    Mykonos Town, Mykonos, 84600, Greece
    22890-26292

    Known For

    • Stunning setting
    • Staff are pitch-perfect—unstuffy and fun
