Northern Peloponnese

The association of regional bus companies (KTEL) provides frequent service at reasonable prices from Athens to Patras, Pyrgos (for Olympia), Corinth, Argos, Epidauros, Nafplion (for Mycenae), and Xylokastro. Buses leave from Terminal A on the outskirts of Athens at Kifissou 100 (take Bus 51 at corner of Zinonos and Menandrou streets, near Omonia Square; from the airport, take Bus E93). Pick up a bus schedule from the Athens EOT or call the number listed below for departure times or seat reservations.

Bargain prices and an extensive network make bus travel a viable alternative to renting a car. Service from Athens to Corinth and Patras, for instance, operates as frequently as every half hour from 6 AM to the late evening, takes only three hours, and spares you a hair-raising drive; the cost is EUR 12.25. In addition to serving major centers such as Nafplion, Argos, Corinth, and Patras, KTEL buses travel to virtually every village in the Northern Peloponnese. Schedules are posted at local KTEL stations, usually on the main square or main street.

Southern Peloponnese

The association of regional bus companies (KTEL) provides frequent service at reasonable prices from Athens to the Southern Peloponnese, with buses several times daily for Gythion, Kalamata, and Tripoli and once a day for Andritsena, Monemvassia, and Pylos. Buses leave from Terminal A on the outskirts of Athens at Kifissou 100 (take Bus 051 at corner of Zinonos and Menandrou streets, near Omonia Square; from the airport, take Bus E93). Pick up a bus schedule from the Athens EOT or call the number listed below for departure times or seat reservations.

In the Peloponnese, you may buy tickets at a local bus station. The network of bus routes lets you move easily, even to more remote sites such as the Pirgos Dirou Caves and Nestor's Palace museum in Chora. There are fewer buses in winter and on weekends. For short distances, you may buy tickets on board; otherwise purchase them in advance at the station.
