Peloponnese Shopping

Olympia has many shops specializing in big-ticket gold jewelry—some nice, others gaudy. Nafplion has an excellent selection of stores selling high-quality gold jewelry, especially around Constitution Square and on Staikopoulou. Patras is the best bet for fashion, especially downtown around Korinthou and Maizonas streets. Kalamata is most famous for its fleshy black olives and olive oil, but is also known for pasteli (sesame-seed-and-honey candy) and figs.

Folk crafts are the highlights in the smaller villages—with a bit of poking around, you can find outstanding examples of strikingly colored old weavings, especially tagaria (shepherd's shoulder bags), which command a higher price than the newer versions. They make wonderful wall hangings.
