Ayia Moni

Fodor's Review:

Before or after exploring Nafplion, drive out the Epidauros road and turn right after 1 km (½ mi) to visit the Byzantine convent and church of Ayia Moni, a place of Christian devotion with a pagan twist. It was built in 1149 by Leo, the bishop of Argos and Nafplion, and an inscription on the west gate expresses the possibility that the Virgin will reward him by absolving him of his sins. In the monastery garden is a fountain said to be the spring Kanathos, where Hera annually renewed her virginity. Admission to the convent is free, but it is generally closed; ring the bell, and the nuns may admit you. They also sell beautiful embroidery.
