Nafplion is the favorite Greek city of many seasoned travelers, probably because it is graciously endowed with a magnificent setting on the Gulf of Argos, imposing remains, shady parks, lively squares, an animated waterfront, and street after street of old houses, churches, and mosques. A stroll on the promenade takes you around the peninsula on which the city is built, with views of the cliffs. Nafplion also has many good hotels and restaurants and is an excellent base from which to explore the nearby classical ruins. Should you want to take a well-deserved break from high-minded sightseeing, a number of good beaches are nearby.
