Argos
The city of Argos (population 21,000), set amid citrus groves on the western edge of the Argive plain, is the economic hub of the region, a workaday town with a long past. The fall of Mycenae and Tiryns at the close of the late Bronze Age proved favorable for Argos, and under King Pheidon in the 7th century BC, it became the chief city in the Peloponnese. In the mid-5th century BC, the city consolidated its hold on the Argive plain by eradicating Mycenae and Tiryns. But like Corinth, Argos was never powerful enough to set its own course, following in later years the leadership of Sparta, Athens, and the Macedonian kings.
