1800
1800 Review
Clearly, some of Santorini's old sea captains lived graciously, as you'll note when dining at one of the Cyclades's most famous restaurants, 1800 (the name refers to the date when the house was built). Owner, architect, and restaurateur John Zagelidis has lovingly restored this magnificent old captain's house with original colors (white, olive green, and gray) and furnishings, including antique sofas, wooden travel chests, and a hand-painted Venetian bed. To top it all off, a superlative roof terrace was constructed, with a vista framed by Ia's most-spectacular church cupolas—a perfect perch on hot nights for taking in the famous Ia sunset. For starters try octopus and chickpea salad on baby spinach with feta and Florina red peppercorns; or the scallops with an aromatic cauliflower tartare and tandoori cream. Entrées include black angus veal with canelloni stuffed with broccoli and arugula with graviera foam and mushroom sauce; and cod with herb ash, black-eyed beans, beetroot salad, and fish roe with cuttlefish ink. Ivoire chocolate with pineapple carpaccio and white chcolate powder is a fine dessert. The wine list is large and nicely tops off a truly fine dining experience.
